Frameless Shower Doors and Other Design Trends for 2020

You’ve probably had plenty of time to think about what your dream bathroom would look like while you’re tucked away at home during the quarantine. Maybe you’ve been thinking about a new vanity or soaking tub. Or, after this year’s shortage of toilet paper, how about a bidet? And, we’re guessing that you’ve been dreaming about frameless glass shower doors to complement your bathroom’s contemporary new look.

Overall, when it comes to bathrooms, the design trends in 2020 continue to favor open, airy styles. If you don’t have the kind of large spaces often featured in design magazines and websites, you may have to get a little creative to create the feeling of simplicity and calm that is so popular these days.

Bathroom Design Trends

The clean lines and open feel of a frameless shower enclosure remain among the most popular trends in bathroom design. And there is every indication that the trend will continue as other design elements are being introduced to complement the sophisticated style of a clear glass shower enclosure

According to the Washington Post, some of the features you may want to consider that will work with your glass shower panels include:

  • Large-format tiles: “Large-format tiles start at 16-inches but can run up to 10 feet. They are square or rectangular and made from ceramic, porcelain and stone. By minimizing grout lines, these generously sized tiles create a seamless look and give the illusion of a bigger space,” the Post’s design gurus says.
  • Japanese soaking tubs: As the Post reports, “Not every bathroom has room for a large, free-standing basin. Enter Japanese soaking tubs, also known as ofuro tubs. They are smaller and deeper than a standard bathtub and have a bench seat.”
  • Linear drains: “A linear drain is an easy way to make a shower look more elegant,” Shannon Kadwell of Anthony Wilder Design Build told the paper.
  • Floating vanities: The downside, of course, is that you’ll probably end up with less storage space.
  • Decorative cement tiles: “Handcrafted tiles are being used to add texture and interest to a space. [They are] a bit of nostalgia without too much fuss,” Kadwell said. “With so many designs and colors you really are only limited by your imagination.”

Toilets with built-in bidets are also gaining in popularity (and if you’ve tried to buy toilet paper at any time since the quarantine began, you don’t need an explanation of why!).
